FLHSMV announced that beginning July 31, 2024, newly issued, renewed or replaced Florida driver licenses and ID cards receive a number containing at least four randomized digits.
The key point
The change happens when a new, renewed or replacement credential is issued. It does not mean every older credential became invalid on that date.
Why it matters for paperwork
If an old number is saved in a profile or template, a later transaction may fail. Use the number on your current credential when a form asks for it.
After receiving the credential
- Review name, address, class, restrictions and expiration date.
- Update active records where the organization actually requires the current credential.
- Protect saved license information as carefully as the physical card.
- Avoid sending a full license number or photo through unsolicited links.
The numbering change is separate from Florida's later policy on driver-license exam language.
